China Mobile Ltd. (SEHK: 0941 and NYSE: CHL) recently unveiled 2010 GPON/EPON equipment procurement result.

Five companies, including ZTE Corporation (SZSE: 000063 and SEHK: 0763), Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Ericsson, as well as Fiberhome Telecommunication Technologies Co., Ltd. (SHSE: 600498), are the successful bidders for GPON equipment procurement.

ZTE, Huawei, Shanghai Bell, and Fiberhome are also winners for EPON equipment procurement.

The fiber to the x (FTTx) technologies mainly include EPON and GPON. Earlier, EPON was mainly supported by domestic manufacturers, like Fiberhome and ZTE. GPON was mainly backed by overseas manufacturers, such as Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson.

Currently, the top three integrated telecom carriers in China, China Mobile, China Telecom Corporation Ltd. (NYSE: CHA and SEHK: 0728), and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762 and SHSE: 600050), all have started their FTTx deployment.

China Mobile commences PON trial in more than 20 provinces in the country. China Telecom deploys EPON massively and starts GPON pilot in small scale. China Unicom begins mass EPON commercial use.
