In London a judge has ruled that Research in Motion (RIM) did not infringe on an e-mail gateway patent filed by Motorola.
Even still, in January Motorola filed five more patent infringement claims with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) against RIM that involve WiFi technologies, application management, user interfaces, and power management controls. Those claims have not yet been investigated or settled.
"The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently has considered, at RIM's request, the same Motorola patent that was at issue in the U.K. lawsuit," Motorola said in a statement. "After considering the same arguments made by RIM in the U.K., the patent office has decided that Motorola's patent is valid in the U.S."
Motorola has reported a net income of $142m for the fourth quarter 2009, compared to a net loss of $3.7bn in the same quarter in the previous year.
