Chinese telecom equipment vendors outperformed their foreign counterparts in the domestic 3G equipment market in 2009, an industry analyst told Interfax on Feb. 1.

"Chinese telecom equipment vendors collectively held an approximate 75 percent market share in 2009," Will Kong, an industry analyst with iSuppli, said.

ZTE Corp. and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. held a respective 35 and 33 percent market share, ranking first and second among their competitors in 2009. Another domestic vendor, Datang Telecom Technology Co. Ltd. held a 7 percent share, ranking fourth, according to Kong.

Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent was ranked third with an 8 percent market share, while Ericsson and Nokia Siemens ranked fifth and sixth, holding a six and five percent share, respectively.

ZTE and Huawei also ranked first and second in the CDMA equipment market, with a 42.4 and 38.2 percent market share respectively, followed by Alcatel-Lucent, Notel and Motorola.

ZTE and Huawei also extended their leading positions to the TD-SCDMA segment, holding a 34 and 27 percent share, respectively. Datang Telecom, Nokia Siemens and Ericsson followed in third, fourth and fifth place, according to Kong.

Huawei led the WCDMA segment with a 30.4 percent share, followed by Ericsson and ZTE which held a 23.9 and 23.6 percent share, respectively.

"ZTE will face pressure in retaining its position in the TD-SCDMA sector, while Huawei will benefit from continuation of China United Network Communications Co. Ltd. (China Unicom)'s national WCDMA network deployment in 2010," Kong predicted.

Currently China Telecommunications Corp (China Telecom) has the largest 3G network, covering 342 cities and over 2,000. China Mobile Communications Corp. (China Mobile) and China Unicom have deployed their networks in 200 and 335 cities, respectively.
