China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) plans to strengthen its guidance and regulation of the Android mobile operating system and endeavor to create a favorable market and regulatory environment for the Android platform, reports ccidcom.com citing MIIT official Guo Fuhua. The Android platform faces many opportunities in China, Guo said; related enterprises should make the best use of its technology, strengthen industry innovation, and provide employees with Android-related training, said the report.
A January 15 China Business New report cited an insider as saying that Google (Nasdaq:GOOG) only plans to preserve its Android-related business and will retain its team of roughly 100 Android engineers in China. Google said January 12 that it is no longer willing to continue censoring search results on Google.cn, the company's Chinese search site, and could possibly face shutting down Google.cn and its Chinese offices.
China Unicom (NYSE:CHU, 0762.HK, 600050.SH) announced January 16 that it plans to delay the launch of two Android-based gPhones, which were originally scheduled for release on January 20, due to Google China's dramatic change of course in China, reports c114.net. Unicom later changed its announcement to say that the delay was because the handsets had not been properly debugged and did not announce a new launch date for the phones, said the report.
Neither Google nor the handset manufacturers, Motorola (NYSE:MOT) and Samsung Electronics (5930.SEO), would comment on the story, said the report.
