China Unicom restructures operations

Updated:2010/1/13 10:43

China Unicom is reorganizing its business, according to reports from China.

The fixed-line network construction, fixed-line network maintenance, and mobile network will be integrated into a single new branch and an information systems division is to be made up of the existing information management and business support divisions.

The move follows the merger of China Unicom with China Netcom in 2008, bringing in a fixed-line division, and the separation of one of its two mobile operations — which went to China Telecom.

China Unicom will also revamp the divisions for risk management, legal affairs, financial information and government-oriented affairs, said the reports. And the company will create a single division for consumer sales.

Meanwhile China Unicom and a Chinese mobile phone maker, Coolpad, have also jointly launched the first WCDMA/GSM dual mode mobile phone product, W700. The dual-mode handset targets high-end users, who have an appetite for China Unicom’s 3G services, but do not want to change their mobile phone numbers.
