According to IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, worldwide mobile shipments for the fourth quarter of 2009 rose to 325.3 million units, up 11.3% from 292.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008.
Nokia Corp. (NOK: News ) shipped 126.9 million in fourth quarter, up 12.2% from 113.1 million units shipped last year quarter, and had a market share of 39.0%, versus 38.7% share reported in the fourth quarter 2008.
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SSNLF.PK: News ,SSNNF.PK: News ) shipped 68.8 million units, representing a growth of 30.3%. Market share for Samsung in the quarter was 21.1%, up significantly from 18.1% share in the prior year quarter.
LG Electronics Ltd. (LGERF.PK: News ) shipped 33.9 million units, 31.9% more from 25.7 million units shipped in 2008 quarter. Market share for LG rose to 10.4% from last year quarter's 8.8%.
Sony Ericsson shipped 14.6 million units, down 39.7% from 24.2 million units shipped in last year quarter, while Motorola Inc. (MOT: News ) shipped 12 million units, down 37.5% from 19.2 million units shipped in the last quarter of 2008.
Sony Ericsson market share in the quarter slipped to 4.5% from 8.3% in the prior year quarter. Motorola's market share also declined to 3.7% from 6.6% in the 2008 quarter.
According to the IDC report, vendors shipped a total of 1.13 billion units on a cumulative worldwide basis in 2009, down 5.2% from the 1.19 billion units shipped in 2008.
IDC said it anticipates the worldwide mobile phone market to rebound in 2010.
