LG Electronics is aiming to overtake local rival Samsung Electronics to become the world's number two mobile phone maker by 2012 as it targets rapid growth of its small smartphone business.
"Obviously, we have to achieve much higher growth than the other players in the overall phone market as well as the smartphone business, but I think we can become the number two player by 2012," Skott Ahn, president of LG's mobile communications division, said yesterday.
LG has a 10 per cent global market share in handsets, compared with Samsung's 20 per cent.NokiaResearch in MotionApple Song Jung-a, Seoul
